Sustainability is an important issue for supermarkets. The retail sector has a major environmental and social impact within its chain, from the production of food to the disposal of packaging and waste. Many chains have already woken up to the issue and are adopting best practices. But how can this movement be made even more dynamic? To this end, GIC Brasil is launching a series of videos to help disseminate sustainability issues to the food retail sector and its chain. Consumers are increasingly concerned about these issues and want companies to assume their responsibilities to reduce their negative impact on the environment and society. The first video in the series produced by the retail innovation and technology company deals with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They emerged from discussions between member countries of the United Nations on how to evolve while meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising future generations. The SDGs emerge as an action plan with 17 global goals, so that all countries grow and cooperate with the sustainability agenda. “Our commitment is to support retailers in this challenge and to do our part,” says Stefania Fernandes, Director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability. GIC Brasil has a sustainability policy and contributes to achieving some of the SDGs. All the goals have numbers. The company contributes to goals 1 (Zero Hunger and Sustainable Agriculture), 4 (Quality Education), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Just as an example, the reduction in waste, losses and stock-outs in stores provided by the RUB automated management system saves resources and protects the environment. It also contributes to efficient working relationships with employees, who feel empowered and like agents of transformation with the solution, customers and suppliers. The five pillars that underpin the SDGs are: People, Prosperity, Planet, Peace and Partnerships. They aim to ensure a more dignified and equal life, protect the planet and its natural resources, reduce abuse and exploitation, and promote partnerships for development everywhere. In the next few videos, you’ll find out more about how GIC is taking the concepts of sustainability into retail. Watch the first video now at https://youtu.be/iZ0T-_PqTTU.
